The majority of the students who are absent are reporting Influenza, or influenza-like symptoms. Influenza is a viral infection of the respiratory tract, more severe than a cold. Early symptoms are fever with a dry cough, headache, tiredness, weakness. Some children have GI symptoms as well. Children may be infectious for 7-10 days, adults are generally infectious 1 day before symptoms and 5 days after symptoms appear. If parents report that their children are ill with these symptoms, please encourage them to keep them home until the are fever-free for 24 hours and feeling well enough to tolerate school activities. Please also encourage opportunities for hand washing, and remind students how to contain their cough.
