Have a great Winter Break!!

Thank you to all students and families for a great 2018 and being so generous! I failed horribly at getting my thank you cards written during the day, but I was really overwhelming with the nice notes.

Have a great break everyone!

PS - I showed students a collection on my background extra clips from 2002-2003, and some asked that I share it. Enjoy!

Information about Halloween

Halloween Festivities!!

Students will celebrate Halloween on 10/31 as a school community. Students will participate in a school-wide parade (outside) and a Halloween party at the end of the day.
  • Parade (1:50pm) ~ Students will parade around the perimeter of Indian Trail School with their classroom. We encourage parents to spread around outside as students walk around the block and then back into the school.  In the event of rain, the parade will be cancelled.
  • Class Parties (2:15 - 3:00pm) ~ Each classroom will have some planned fun time with a treat.
    • Parent Volunteers ~ Each class is allowed 5 volunteers to help with the class party. Those names are being collected by Room Parents and the office will have a list of parents for entry. For the safety of our children, only parent volunteers whose names have been submitted to the classroom teacher will be allowed to enter the building.
    • Snacks ~ The PTO is sponsoring a school-wide treat for the Halloween party. Students with allergies were notified via email/phone call for alternative treats that are allergen free and also being purchased through PTO. We ask that you do not send your student to school with treats or candy to be passed out.
    • Costumes - We encourage students to dress up for Halloween and ask the following:
      • Costumes should be safely designed and age appropriate to allow for adequate vision, mobility and warmth.
      • Avoid fake blood
      • Masks cannot be worn.
      • NO TOY WEAPONS of any type will be allowed at school.

4) We will being using Seesaw in our class to showcase student work for parents. Today I sent home a parent sign-up sheet. This is NOT mandatory, and I will be going over this at OpenHouse as well.

Finally, if there is a change in after-school plans for your student, please include the school secretary, Patricia Garcia, pgarcia@nssd112.org, on any emails you send. We do not have any specials in the afternoon this year, so my ability to check email is limited. Mrs. Garcia will make sure to send a note down to confirm I receive the message. Thanks!

Homework for Friday, August 24th

1) Read, discuss, and sign your Chromebook contract (Due on Monday 8/27)
2) Nightly Reading -  Today we checked out books from the library, so all students should have a book (or more) to read at home. In addition, I sent home Scholastic Book Order Forms (the class code - NPWBW - is on the form) for any students looking for reading books. While nightly reading will not be mandatory until after Open House, students should develop a plan for when and where they will read at home.
3) Students need cheap, but working, headphones or earbuds for class as soon as possible.

2nd Orchestra Night!

A note from Mrs. Steckel...
Last night we had a successful evening of orchestra recruitment and have heard that there were some families who were unable to make our event.

There will be one more orchestra night.  We will provide an overview of 4th grade orchestra and students will be able to try out the instruments to determine which one they would like to play. Three rental companies will be there to provide information on renting instruments.
When: Tuesday, September 4
Where: Sherwood School, 1900 Stratford Rd, Highland Park, IL 60035
Time: 7:00 PM
Linked is the Orchestra Information Sheet

Still going strong!

We had another great day in 4B!

We will be starting nightly reading once we have our first library checkout next week. However, it would be a good idea for students to start reading at night to get in the habit. It is not mandatory (yet), but highly encouraged.

And below is a message from Mrs. Luthardt!

Great second day!

Today a Chromebook contract was sent home for students and parents to discuss, sign, and send back by next Monday (August 27th). Please let me know if you have any questions! (Also attached below.)

As I told the class today, each family has a different approach and outlook regarding technology, and I fully support and will abide by each family's decision. I will discuss in further detail at Open House.

What a great first day!

Welcome to 4th grade! I am so excited for this year. While more information will be forthcoming over the next few weeks and at Open House, I wanted to share some important details right away.
  • Class Blog: mrbrandstrader.com (you are here!)
    • I do my best to post all class communication, homework assignments, and important school dates on my blog, as well as relevant class websites and links, in order to make it as easy as possible for students and parents to find the sites or information they are looking for.
  • My email: bbrandstrader@nssd112.org.
    • Please email me with any questions or concerns you may have. There are many changes this year, so please do not hesitate if you have a question or need clarification. =
  • If you ordered supplies and they were not delivered to the classroom, please send a note letting me know. Every year a few bags get placed in the wrong room, and I’m sure it will be resolved quickly. I have a plethora of supplies, so all students will have everything they need in the class.
  • A HOME FOLDER will be used to deliver documents and notes to and from school daily. This will be used for homework, flyers from school, and communication from home. This take-home folder should be emptied on a regular basis. Please help your child get in the routine of unpacking and re-packing this folder every night.
  • Your student will need a pair of headphones/earbuds dedicated for school use. These should be small and cheap. I prefer these headphones/earbuds stay at school, as they are needed almost daily.
  • Specials (such as gym, art, and music) begin this week. Gym shoes need to be worn everyday for P.E. class in order to participate. If you would like to send a pair of gym shoes to be kept at school, please make sure that your child’s first and last name is labeled on each shoe.
  • Please send ONLY healthy snacks (fruit, fresh veggies, yogurt), in order to adhere to our district’s food policy. Please visit the district website for more information. You will find the policy in the posted parent handbook.
  • Recess/Lunch is every day from 11:50-12:40. Students need to be prepared to dress for a variety of temperatures and weather conditions. Also, please inform your child if he/she will be receiving hot lunch at school.
If you have any comments, questions, or concerns prior to Open House on Wednesday, September 5th (or at any point throughout the school year), please do not hesitate to contact me by email, voicemail (224-765-3477), or by a note sent in with your child. Thank you in advance for all of your support!
