MARC CHAGALL
Indian Trail School Fine Arts

Dear Parents,
Today, I visited your child’s classroom as part of the PTO’s continuing Fine Arts Education program. I presented the artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985).
Chagall created a long and unique career in virtually every artistic medium, including paintings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints. His work is difficult to categorize into any one movement (e.g. cubist, surrealist, fauvist, etc.).
Marc’s childhood years, his family and his Russian village had a huge impact on the subject matter and style of his art. He is best known for taking ordinary scenes and transforming them into dreamlike worlds, and for his extraordinary use and understanding of color.
He is considered one of the most successful Jewish artists of the twentieth century.
Ask your child to tell you about the “X” technique Chagall used to tell multiple stories in a single painting.
Visit the Art Institute of Chicago to see Chagall’s beautiful stained glass windows (“America Windows”).
